Delta Eagles Ninth-Grade Team Undefeated
This is a reprint of a letter written by a relative who is a huge fan of local youth sports, and knows what it means to be a valuable team member. His son, Danny Smekens, passed earlier this year from cancer which he battled for too many years – his passing occurred way too early. My uncle watched his son put together some amazing youth baseball teams in New Castle, Indiana. Danny was the only coach in New Castle Little League to coach in three state finals, and one of only two coaches to have won two State Championships.
Thanks to Jim Smekens for continuing to support youth sports in our area, and we agree, Delta’s coaching staff must be eagerly anticipating the start of their Fall, 2012 football season.
The Delta Eagles ninth-grade football team finished their season Monday night with a victory over Shelbyville by a score of 52-0. The team went undefeated this season with a record of 9-0. In the nine games, the team scored 374 points to their opponents’ 54. This group of boys also was undefeated as seventh and eighth-graders. In the past three seasons, the team scored 829 points to their opponents’ 102.
This is a special group of football players, and I am proud that my grandson is part of the team. I only know a few of the players but the ones that I have met are outstanding young men.
I am sure that coach Zgunda is looking forward to the next three years. I know I am.
