Those Evil Menaces
Evil menaces are lurking everywhere. Just below the surface…nearly invisible to the human eye they are eating the very substance that gives our landscape beauty. The do their damage slowly until there is almost nothing left for them to attack.
Scientists have studied their movement throughout the Midwest. In this case, paying close attention to details are important as movement of these menaces contribute to their spreading. According to many experts in the field, their origin can be traced to Communist China.
No, we’re not talking about republicans and the damage they’ve caused to Midwestern towns and workers!
We’re referring to the green menace called the Emerald Ash Borer which is causing thousands of dollars in damage to our nearly 1,000 ash trees on public land. Who cares about a little beetle?
Well, taxpayers of Delaware County should be very interested in their menacing work. To treat each tree with a solution to prevent their infestation costs $400-500 per tree. For those real quick with math, they’ve already had an expletive go off in their mind.
A plan is being devised by our Urban Forestry Department and preliminary estimates are expected to cost nearly $500,000 per year to protect our local ash trees.
However, just like with the election, being an informed owner of Ash trees are the key to preventing the spread of this menace. If you are an owner of one or more Ash trees, read the literature about the menaces and then do your part – inspect the trees.
